Healthy Food - Inside Seeds - Lychee
Native to China, Lychee grows best in tropical and subtropical regions and has recently been found in many parts of the world. Botanically, it is lychee (Litchi chinensis) of the sugarcane family.
Lychees can reach a height of 20 meters but are generally
between 10 and 20 meters tall. Lychee is grown in China, Australia, the United
States, South Africa, Thailand, Vietnam, and parts of India. In Australia, it is
becoming increasingly popular as production increases. It is very popular in
Southeast Asia, including Pakistan, India, and China.
Historically, the cultivation of lychees specifically for
food dates back to 2000 BC. Records show that its spread around the world began
in the 18th century.
The lychee is often referred to as the lychee berry, but
lychees are better known as drupes, along with peaches and apricots.
Lychee is one of the richest sources of vitamin C in the
diet. It is low in fat and contains a large amount of calcium, magnesium, and
phosphorus. It is also an excellent source of carbohydrates.
Many medicinal properties are attributed to lychees.
Many people have reported that eating lychees helps relieve
coughs, probably due to its high vitamin C content.
Some reports also indicate that lychees can help treat
stomach ulcers when consumed before meals. These reports are based on consumer
surveys, not scientific studies.
Regular consumption of lychee would also improve symptoms
associated with swollen glands.
The taste of lychee is very sweet and its sweetness and
texture are compared to grapes. I have read that in China they make tea from
the skin of the lychee and there is also a commercial lychee tea.
Lychees are found in many commercial products, including
- · Lychee syrup - used to flavor foods and also tea.
- · Top lychee juice - commercially available in tetra packs. Fresh lychees can also be used in homemade juices.
- · Canned lychee - available and can be used for salads and cooking.
- · Lychees are also available in syrup form, which can be used as a base for smoothies and other recipes.
- · Dried lychees are very similar to sultanas or raisins.
In areas where fresh lychees are not available, one way to
include lychees in the diet is to purchase them.
Adding lychees to homemade juices increases the sweetness
and taste, and increases the vitamin C content.
