Macadamia Nut
The macadamia nut is the seed of the macadamia tree, an
evergreen. Although it is commonly associated with the state of Hawaii, the
plant itself is native to eastern Australia. Hawaii became world-famous in the
20th century for the production and export of these nuts, a tradition that
continues to this day. Many tourists snack on macadamia nut cookies,
chocolate-covered fish, or fried pecans.
If you ever visit Oahu, be sure to try the fresh macadamia
nuts and take them home to share with family and friends. This way, you'll be
able to take home not only a picture but also a glimpse of life on the island.
There are many ways to experience the macadamia culture on Oahu.
1. Tropical Farm: At this macadamia nut farm, macadamia nuts
are grown along with a multitude of other tropical fruits. Guided tours of the
farm are given daily, and the gift store sells a variety of treats made from
local nuts and coffee. Souvenirs such as various creams and aromatic oils made
from fresh ingredients are also available, and free samples are often offered
upon request. The farm is located about 50 minutes east of the Ko Olina
district on Oahu.
2. After visiting the farm, head to Boots & Kimo's for
the famous macadamia nut pancakes. In addition to macadamia nut slices and
shavings, the pancakes are served with a thick homemade syrup for added
sweetness. The pancakes can be served with the best
guava juices or orange and maracuja juice.
3. Leonard's Bakery: This Honolulu bakery is famous for its
homemade donuts and malasadas. The macadamia nut malasadas are sweet and crispy
and contrast with the macadamia nut pancakes at Boots and Kimo's.
4. Menehune Mac Factory: At the Menehune Mac Factory &
Gift Centre, you can buy chocolate-covered macadamia nuts to take home as a
souvenir for your friends and family (or eat on the way home). The chocolate-covered candies are made at the factory and you can visit the production area.
All products are sold at factory-direct prices, so it's easy to get supplies
here.
If you visit Oahu, be sure to learn about the macadamia
tradition and enjoy the entire process from growing, harvesting, and processing
to eating. These delicious seeds are a great souvenir to take home and, in
addition to the many photos, will enrich the memories of your trip. Don't miss
